John McKee Swinford, 80, Cynthiana, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 at Cedar Ridge Health Care Campus.
He was born April 19, 1932 in Harrison County, Ky., a son of the late Judge Mac and Minnie Benton Peterson Swinford.
He was a graduate of Cynthiana High School, Princeton University and the University of Michigan, and was a member of Cynthiana Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee, Elder and Deacon. He was a member of the Harrison County Bar Association, the Cynthiana-Harrison County Football Alumni Association, an honorably discharged Army veteran and for many years was a high school and college football official.
He was a retired attorney with Swinford and Sims Law firm, former Chairman for the Democratic Party, a member of the House of Representatives 1962-1965 and 1970-1975, former House Majority Leader 1972-1975, was named Citizen of the Year by the Cynthiana Chamber of Commerce, and was a Kentucky Colonel.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jouett Reed.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Foster Swinford; two sons, Jim (Tina) Swinford, Cynthiana and Bill (Regina) Swinford, Frankfort; three sisters, Sarah (Hall) Kinney, Cynthiana, Alice Jane Kolbe, Harrison County, and Ann Gregg (Del) Dunn, Athens, Ga.; five grandchildren, Ethan, Anika, Laurie, Rachel and Andrew Swinford; several nieces and nephews; and three special friends, Susan Kitchen, Teddy Taylor and Bobby McDowell.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at Cynthiana Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Patrick Laney. Burial will follow the service in Battle Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Thursday at Cynthiana Presbyterian Church.

Pallbearers were: Teddy Taylor, Tom McKee, Charles Swinford, James Taylor Swinford, Hall Kinney, Del Dunn, Joe B. Hall and Joseph Korona.
Honorary pallbearers were: Members of the Harrison County Bar Association.
Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
