Carl Donald Smith Sr., 75, died surrounded by his family at Baptist Health on July 22, 2015.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Cochran Smith. He and Joyce met while Marines stationed in Hawaii. They married two weeks later and have three sons, Carl Smith Jr. (Paula Sue), Georgetown, Ky.; Troy Smith (Mackenzie), Kansas City, Mo.; Jason Smith (Jessica), Cynthiana, Ky.; Carl is also survived by his grandchildren, Carl Smith III, Georgetown, Ky., Dylan Smith, Lexington, Ky., Matthew Smith, Monroe, N.C., Virginia Smith, Monroe, N.C. and Elliott Smith, Cynthiana, Ky.; He is survived by one sister, Sharlene Bruckman of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Steven Smith of Castle Pine, Colo.; as well as nieces and nephews and a very special neighbor, Eli Gonzales.
Carl retired after 38 years with AT&T. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the American Legion Post in Georgetown, was an avid golfer as a member of both the Cynthiana Country Club and Canewood Golf Course. While in the Marines, Carl wrestled in the Olympic trials. He enjoyed his family, friends, neighbors, and golfing buddies. He was never without a joke for his companions.
A celebration of his life was held Saturday, July 25 at Tucker, Yocum, & Wilson Funeral Home. His ashes were interred in a private family service at the Veterans Cemetery in Willamstown, Ky.
