James Arnold "Jim" Brown, 86, Cynthiana, died Monday, May 29, 2017, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born in Magoffin County, Kentucky, on Nov. 1, 1930, to the late Judge Frank and Celia Arnett Brown. Mr. Brown attended the University of Kentucky where he was involved in ROTC and after graduation joined the United States Air Force where he became a pilot from 1953 till 1954. On Sept. 13, 1971, he was the fourth person in the state of Kentucky to receive their Emergency Medical Technician certificate after opening Browns EMS in 1970. He was Mayor of Cynthiana from 1994 until 1999 and again in 2007 until 2009 when he resigned due to health issues. Prior to being mayor, he served several terms as commissioner.
Mr. Brown was owner of several businesses, to mention a few, Grand Haven Nursing Home, Farmers Deposit Bank, Deposit Bank of Carlisle and the Ramada in Paintsville. He was a member of the Harrison Memorial Hospital board along with many other boards and organizations. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Lee Rodgers Brown; two brothers, Laurence Gray Brown and Paul David Brown, and a sister, Charity Mae Utterback.
He is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Carole Utterback Brackmen, Lynda Brown Wiley, Judy Brown Grim, Paul David Brown Jr., James Michael Brown, John Mark Brown and Cathy Brown Wright and two sisters-in-law, Christine Helton Brown and Peggy Morrison Brown, both of Paintsville.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home by Sammy Harris. Visitation was Tuesday. Entombment will be in Battle Grove Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Paul David Brown Jr., James Michael Brown, John Mark Brown, Slick Garrison, Edwin Culbertson, Oma Doyle, Betsy Haley, Diane Hicks, Judy Faulkner, Greg Wills, David Sanders, Darl and Minerva Music, Bobby Lake, Jack Keith, Charles Brunker, Paul Patton, Doug Garrett, Custer Blair, Taylor Mathers and the late Robert Sparks.
