Mark Douglas Smith, 76, a resident of Thomasville, N.C., died Tuesday, May 24, 2016.
He was born Jan. 9, 1940 in Scott County, Ky., a son of the late William T. Smith and Elizabeth Eugenia Sanford Smith. He had made this area his home since 1989. He was first retired from Parker Hannifin in McAllen, Texas and then from Elkhart Rubber in High Point, was a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church and faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and usher.
He was a Kentucky Colonel, an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, a member of the 101 Club, enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing, liked visiting friends, worked on and repaired antique clocks and loved working on his farm in Kentucky. He was also a Mason and current owner of the Thomasville Emporium. One of his greatest pleasures was his family, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and loved watching his grandchildren play whatever sports they were involved with.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Steven Smith; a daughter, Weenoka Smith; two brothers, William Ray Smith and Roy Sanford Smith.
On Dec. 17, 1960 he married Rebecca Ruth Mitchell who survives of the home. Also surviving is his son, Dr. Mark D. Smith II and wife April of Thomasville; his daughter, Natalie S. Cumpton and husband Ira of Thomasville; grandchildren, Megan Fields and husband Andy, James Cumpton, Miranda Cumpton, Marissa Cumpton, Mark Smith III, Mitchell Smith, Dawson Smith and Preston Smith; great-grandchild, Audrey Fields; step great-grandchild, Connor Fields; brothers, Eugene Thomas Smith of Sadieville, Ky., Everett Dean Smith (Kathy) of Thomasville.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 26 at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church followed by the funeral service with the Rev. Jason Poe, Rev. Stuart White and Rev. Bynum Orr officiating.
There will be a visitation at the Tucker-Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home in Georgetown, Ky. from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. Saturday at Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana, Ky.
