Melbourne "Mel" Sanford Courtney, 90, went to be with the Lord March 7, 2015.
He was a son of the late Ernest and Lula Roberts Courtney, and was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jean Loy and sister-in-law Billie Chenault.
He was a graduate of Georgetown College where he was a letterman in baseball, was a banker, having retired from CIT Financial Services and vice president of Lexington Federal Savings and Loan. He served his country during World War II as a member of the "Thunderbirds" in the 45th Infantry Division and received a Purple Heart and the French Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Purple Heart Organization and Disabled American Veterans, was a devoted member of Southland Christian Church and loved his lord. He enjoyed the beach, baseball, watching Kentucky basketball, but most of all he loved his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Virginia Faulconer Courtney; one brother, Bobby Courtney (Bertha); two children, Jan Williams (Frank) and Pat Courtney; three grandchildren, Chris Williams, Clay Williams (Megan), and Eric Courtney; one great-grandson, Cade Williams; nieces and nephews, Karen Kirkland (Sam), Kurt Krauss (Susan), Katie Osborne (Robin), Ernie Loy (Sue), Donna Briggs (Jeff), Steve Courtney and Brad Courtney.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Milward - Southland, 391 Southland Drive. A memorial service will be at Southland Christian Church, 5001 Harrodsburg Road, Wednesday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. Private family burial will be in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
