Patricia (Pat) Powell Rees, 84, died at Sugarmill Manor, near her residence in Homosassa, Fla. on May 15, 2015 of natural causes.
She was born April 10, 1931 in Hopkinsville, Ky., the daughter of Dr. Paul S. Powell and Chauncey Guy (Morgan) Powell. Dr Powell was a former president of Kentucky Wesleyan College from 1937-1950. He also held 13 pastorates during his 50 years as a Methodist minister.
Pat also resided in Bowling Green and later moved to Winchester where she spent most of her childhood. She graduated from Winchester H.S. in 1948. In addition to being a superb student, she was part of the 1948 State Champion Debating Team. Ironically, her team beat the squad from Hopkinsville where she was born. She graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1950 before heading to Nashville where she enrolled and graduated with a BA degree from Vanderbilt University two years later (1952). While there, she met Milton G. Rees, (Cynthiana) her future husband of 61 years.
In 1955 after supporting her husband Milton during his obligation to the U.S. Army, they returned to Milton's hometown of Cynthiana. Raising their two boys John and William (Beebo), she helped her husband in the family business (Harrison Motor Company). She was also active in the PTA, the Hospital Auxiliary and numerous other clubs.
In 1959 she was commissioned by McCall's Better Living magazine to help compile their second annual report to the U.S. Congress. Over the years, Pat substitute taught throughout the county; taught Sunday school and was a long time member of the Cynthiana Methodist Church. Her hobbies primarily included golf and fishing, was an avid golfer and was one of the first members of the Cynthiana Country Club where she was very active for many years.
In later years, she frequented the local Curves fitness center and garnered many friendships. Simply put, Pat was a "people person" who enjoyed life to the fullest. She moved to Florida for health reasons in 2012 and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include: a son John (Elayne) Milton Rees II, Homosassa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Christopher John Rees, Gainesville, Fla., Matthew Garnett Rees, Orlando, Fla. and Morgan Elizabeth (Weaver), Oklahoma City, Okla.; and nieces and nephews residing in Florida, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
She was preceded in death by her husband Milton G. Rees Jr., her second son, William (Beebo) Carleton Rees, and her two brothers, Paul S. and Lewis C. Powell.
Services will be held at Drake-Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m.
