Susan Jane Zengel Mahoney Scharber, 69, Winchester, Tenn., formerly of Cynthiana, died April 30, 2013 at the Southern Tennessee Medical Center.
She was born in Washington, DC to Fred and Marjorie Smith Zengel. She was raised in New Orleans, La., a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and Centre College (1966), married and settled in Cynthiana, Ky. in 1969. While living in Cynthiana, she made a career as a tax preparer, while also riding and showing horses with her daughters, was an active adult leader in the local and state 4-H horse programs, as well as a substitute teacher in the Harrison County School system.
In 1992 she took an opportunity to follow her lifelong dream, and opened Riva Lake Riding Stables in Winchester, Tenn., and over the next 19 years she taught hundreds of local children and adults all forms of horseback riding, as well as acted as Director of Riding for both Camp Point Clear and Camp Riva Lake for Girls. In 2002, she married Donnie Scharber.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her sister Mary Z Pelias, in 2012.
Survivors include: her husband Donnie Scharber; daughters, Karen (Ryan) Gravel of Atlanta, and Lisa (Todd) Rismiller of Powell, Ohio; grandchildren, Lucia and Jonas Gravel and Caroline Rismiller; brother, Fred (Alice) Zengel of Anderson, S.C.; step daughter, Summer Hughes and grandchildren Gracie and Bradley Hughes of Clarksville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held May 3 with cremation and internment in the Franklin Memorial Gardens.
