Velma Thomas, 89, departed this life on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at her home in Las Vegas, Nev., after a short illness.
She was born Nov. 17, 1923 in Cynthiana, Ky., daughter of the late Francis and Jesse McCoy.
She attended Banneker High School, and in 1939 she married Woodford Thomas. She and Woodford moved the family to Chicago in 1951 and in 1987 she returned to what she affectionately called home, Cynthiana. She loved and actively participated at Ebenezer Methodist Church as well as many other organizations, loved her little white house on Water Street and was known as the lady with the two white dogs. In 2005, she moved to Las Vegas to reside with her daughter.
Those left to cherish Velma's memory include: her son, Billy Thomas of Chicago, Ill.; daughter, Juanita Williams (Harvey) of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James McCoy (Martha) of Chicago; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodford Thomas, and brothers, Jesse and Melvin McCoy.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 at 12 p.m. at Ebenezer Methodist Church, 205 N. Locust St., Cynthiana, Ky., with visitation from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
