DeKALB – Barbara Burkart, 86, of DeKalb, Ill., died peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.
She was born July 1, 1927, in Sycamor, to the late Charles W. and Irene (Pagel) Bradt. She was their first child.
Barbara grew up in DeKalb and graduated from DeKalb High School. She attended Beloit College
In 1946, she married Edward J. Quinlan of Michigan, and they had five children. The marriage ended in a divorce.
Barbara loved music, not only as an accomplished pianist, but her lovely soprano voice sang daily. She was fond of her pets, ,raised many dogs and cats throughout her life, and worked as a dog groomer for many years. She sewed beautifully and collected antiques. Barbara had a delightful sense-of-humor.
In 1967 she married the man of her dreams, Patrick G. Burkart of Sycamore. Their 37-year journey together, attending flea markets and going on excursions, were the finest days of her life. He was her cherished husband and perfect family man.
Barbara served for eight years as a corrections officer for the DeKalb County Sheriffs Department and for 16 years as the administrator of Fairview Park Cemetery.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty Bradt Gault of Harlingen, Texas, and Bertha (Richard) Bradt Wespiser of Oxford, Ohio; five children, Cheryl Quinlan Johnson of Rochelle, Kathleen Quinlan Davenport of DeKalb, Patricia Burkart Venners of Sycamore, Michael Burkart of Sarasota, Fla., and Julie (Joseph) Burkart Kelley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Patrick, and a brother, Ronald Bradt Sr.
Her family offers sincere thanks to the caregivers at the County Home and to Dr. Gona.
