Blaine A. Askeland, 78, of Sycamore, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born June 3, 1934, in DeKalb, the son of Arthur and Blanche (Johnson) Askeland. Blaine grew up in Esmond and then moved to his family farm in Sycamore in 1950. He was a graduate of the Burlington High School, Class of 1952.
On Nov. 3, 1956, he was united in marriage to Janice Erlewine who was impressed that he never met a stranger. From 1955-56, Blaine was a golden glove boxer and in 1957, he left to serve in the U.S. Army, making many lifelong friends.
In 1968, Blaine built his home on the family farm. He worked hard as a carpenter until 1972, when he started Thick and Thin Sawmill that many knew as a coffee shop.
Blaine loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed his retirement camping and fishing trips with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling to new places with his beloved wife.
He was a member of the Sycamore Steam Show. There, he worked at the sawmill and enjoyed being Steamy the steam engine clown with his donkey, Daisy. He had a soft spot in his heart for his loyal dogs. His generous and loving heart will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, of Sycamore; his children, Lynn (Mike) Kohley of DeKalb, Mike (Lani) Askeland of Sycamore, and Brenda (Tom) Lundgren of Genoa; eight grandchildren, Matt, Kelly, Chad, Andrew, Amy, Jay, Becky and Carly; and one great-grandchild, Loren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jeanette Larson.
