Clyde F. Alvis, 87, of Kirkland, Ill., died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Northwoods Care Center in Belvidere.
Born Aug. 29, 1920, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of Joseph F. and Minerva V. (Joyner) Alvis. He married Mary Eddy on Jan. 31, 1981.
Clyde was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and North Atlantic. He was a life member of the Battle of Ormoc Bay Alumni, attending its annual reunions. Clyde was employed as a shipping and receiving supervisor at Essex in Hampshire for more than 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Kirkland; a son, Allen (Janet) Alvis of Mokena; three grandchildren, Anne, Matthew and Zachary; four stepchildren, Mike (Barb) Alsup, Marta (Dave) Guzzardo, Sue (Jerry Bidstrup) Hawkins and Paul (Cyndi) Alsup; a stepdaughter-in-law, JoAnn Alsup; 11 step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Virginia) Alvis; and a sister, Ethel Minerva (Billy) Turpin.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Chris Alsup; a brother, Robert Alvis; and a sister, Josephine Earley.
The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa, with the Rev. James P. Freund officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
