FOSTER E. "FOS" LOONEY(1922 - 2014)

DeKALB – Foster Eugene "Fos" Looney, 91, of DeKalb, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at home, surrounded by family, and went to be with his beloved wife.
Born Nov. 29, 1922, in and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Hartman Eugene and Nola Edith (Foster) Looney, Foster married his high-school sweetheart, Betty J. Boucher, on Nov. 10, 1944. They enjoyed 67 fabulous years together before she passed in November 2011.
Fos worked for Swift Co. during high school, and after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he became a dive-bomber pilot, flying off the USS Hornet. He was awarded the Navy Cross after his involvement in the Battle of the Philippines Sea. He then made a longtime career with US Steel in sales and was transferred to Chicago in 1959. He and Betty raised their family in Waukegan. After retirement, the couple moved to DeKalb to be near family.
Fos and Betty were avid readers and regular patrons of the DeKalb Public Library. Fos was invited by the library four consecutive years to give Veteran's Day speeches recounting his military service in the Navy.
He is survived by his sons, Jon Christopher (Christie) Looney of Elk Rapids, Mich., and Patrick (Rebecca) Looney of DeKalb; grandchildren, Chad Looney of DeKalb, Joshua (Nicole) Looney of Sycamore, Patrick (Sara) Looney of Elk Rapids and Gretchen (fiancé, Todd Tuntland) Looney of DeKalb; great-granddaughters, Addison and Claire Looney; sister, Mary Edith Looney Brous; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents; brothers-in-law, Dr. William Brous and H.H. Boucher; and sisters-in-law, Jane (John) Wallace and Ruth Boucher.
The family would like to extend special thank-yous to the owners of HomeInStead and their CNAs, who compassionately assisted in Fos's care, and to KishHealth System Hospice Staff, who were all wonderful with Fos and the entire family.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt of First Lutheran Church, DeKalb, officiating, and with full military honors by American Legion, AmVets and VFW. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. The visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home.
A reception and celebration of Fos and Betty's lives will be at a later date.
