DeKALB - LaVonne S. Smith McDowell, 94, of DeKalb, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb.
Born Aug. 12, 1918, in Lee, Ill., the daughter of Sander and Nellie (Bjerge) Sanderson, LaVonne married Donald R. Smith on Oct. 14, 1942, in Lincoln, Neb. After his death, she married Craig A. McDowell on April 2, 1977.
LaVonne graduated from DeKalb High School Class of 1936 and then went on to receive her bachelor of arts and master's degrees from Northern Illinois University. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Naomi Circle, DeKalb Womenís Club, Pi Lambda Theta International Education Association, and the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. LaVonne was a volunteer at the Country Store she was an avid reader, an artist and enjoyed bowling and golf. She also played the piano and loved music.
She is survived by her daughter, Carla (Steven) Hardenbergh, of DeKalb; her grandchildren, Shannon (Michael) Dalesandro, of Chicago, Jason (Dana) Hardenbergh, of Yorkville, Shawn (Liz) Smith, of Broomfield, Colo., Jonah Hardenbergh, of Austin, Texas, Shelby (William) Johnson, of Sycamore, Jared (Crystal) Hardenbergh, of Downers Grove; great grandchildren, Alex, Emma, William, Roslyn; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith, of Sycamore; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Smith and Craig McDowell; son, Roger Donn Smith; brothers, Burdette, Adlai, Ralph, Sandford and Claude Sanderson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St. DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
