Marshall Charles Gauer Jr., 89, formerly of Pelican Rapids, Minn., New Port Richey, Fla., Millington, Ill., and Sandwich, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Countryside Care Centre in Aurora, surrounded by family.
Marshall was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Sandwich, to the late Marshall and Madlen (Mann) Gauer.
Marshall attended Sandwich schools and later became an excellent and a perfectionist in carpentry. He was married for nearly 66 years to the late Clara Fay Sherman. Marshall was recruited by the Chicago Shipyards as a carpenter, building ships, during World War II and later worked out of the Aurora Carpenters Union hall. He later built houses in the Millington-Sandwich areas and in Florida. He also was a talented cabinet maker in the Millington area. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, taking his sons and friends on numerous raccoon hunting and frog gigging trips. He enjoyed playing euchre and Yahtzee with family and friends.
Marshall was a loving father to Charles Arthur (Julie Jacks) Gauer of Tombal, Texas, and Marshall Eugene "SHEIK" (Debbie Warner) Gauer of Aurora; grandfather to Gretchen (Kyle) McCord and Krista (Charles) O'Quin, both of Spring, Texas, and Allyson Gauer of Aurora; and great-grandfather to Erin Grace McCord of Spring, Texas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Fay; and three siblings, Margaret, Albert and Joseph.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place in Aurora, with Fr. Jerome Leake officiating. Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Somonauk. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at the funeral home.
