SYCAMORE – William Henry Awalt, 91, of Sycamore, Ill., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb, with his family by his side.
He was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Ashland, to Henry W. and Mary L. (Stout) Awalt. After spending much of his childhood in Ashland, he graduated from Rutherford High School in Rutherford, N.J. He returned to the Midwest, where he met his beloved Mary Margaret Murphy. After serving in the U.S. Army
from 1942 to 1944, he and Mary were married on June 2, 1945, in DeLand. They were blessed to have more than 56 years together before she preceded him in death in 2002.
Bill graduated from the University of Illinois
with a degree in accounting. He joined Ideal Industries in 1951, and became treasurer of the company in 1972. He was with Ideal Industries for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a past exalted ruler of the Sycamore Elks Lodge
1392, a past president of the Sycamore Lions Club and was a member of the Sycamore VFW
. He was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Bill was an avid golfer, and enjoyed spending many winter months with Mary in Tucson, Ariz. He had a love of the land and cherished his early experiences on the farm. Each year he would eagerly anticipate planting season and looked forward to visiting his fields.
Bill is survived by two daughters, Diane (Don) Berke of Bella Vista, Ark., and Kathy Aichele of Sycamore; four grandchildren, Ron (Kim) Berke of Rockford, Randy (Holly) Berke of Rockford, Ben (Tina) Woolsey of Montgomery and Katie Woolsey of Aurora; great-grandchildren, Abby, Trevor, Taylor and Lexi Berke; sister-in-law, Lyetta Awalt of Effingham; nephews, Terry (Kathy) Awalt of Mattoon and Dave (Bev) Awalt of Effingham.
He is now reunited with his wife, Mary; daughter, Margaret "Peg"; parents; and brother, Fred.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave., Sycamore, with the Rev. C. William Landis officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore with military honors. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services Ltd., Quiram Sycamore Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
A memorial fund has been established for DeKalb County Hospice or the Special Care Unit at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.
