HELENA BELNAP Obituary

Helena Marie (Danielsen) Belnap, 102, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at home.
Born Oct. 12, 1908, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Rasmus Marius and Emily Sophia (Johnson) Danielsen, and the last of nine children, Helena was raised in Council Bluffs and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Boyles Business College, Weber College in Ogden, Utah, and Brigham Young University.
After attending BYU, she worked as a secretary to the president of Weber College, and then during World War II, she was the secretary to the commanding officer of the Ogden Army Depot. She married Ralph Belnap after he returned from the war on Dec. 10, 1945, in Utah; he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1996.
After living in Wyoming for 10 years, they moved in 1958 to DeKalb, where her husband was a professor in the Education Department at Northern Illinois University.
She was extremely active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings during the years, such as Stake Relief Society president in two different states and Northern States Mission Young Women's President. Her greatest joy as she aged was being a temple worker in the Chicago LDS Temple.
It seemed as though everyone Helena met became a special friend.
The family would like to thank DeKalb County Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Helena during her final weeks of life.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and eight brothers and sisters and their spouses.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 675 Fox Ave., Sycamore. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa, beside her loving husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Helena Marie Belnap Memorial Fund for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sycamore, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
