OLIVER CARPENTER Obituary

Oliver A. "Ollie" Carpenter, 95, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.
Ollie was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Valparaiso, Ind., the son of Arthur Oliver and Emma (Varner) Carpenter. Ollie married Mary Margaret Diedrich on April 18, 1942, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb.
Ollie took great pride in his work and was employed over the years at Turner Brass Co., Ideal Industries, McGirr Implement and Sieg Automotive. A lifelong sports nut, Ollie was an intrepid Cub fan and faithful Bear supporter. He was known for his offbeat sense of humor as well as his generous and compassionate spirit – one always knew when Ollie was in the room as his booming voice and outgoing nature made his presence known.
Ollie served in the Department of Interior Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Guard. He was an involved community member taking a special interest in the Boy Scouts of America where he served as a scoutmaster for many years. St Mary Church in DeKalb was his home parish for 69 years and he took on many service roles for them. Ollie had a special place in his heart for the Knights of Columbus and was an honorary life member of the KC DeKalb Council #717 where he had been a 65-year member and served as a Past Grand Knight. Additionally Ollie was a member of the 4th Degree Andrew Mitchell Council #0215 in DeKalb where he had served as a Past Faithful Navigator.
Ollie is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary; an extensive family; and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday, Jan. 19, with Fr. Kenneth Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call on from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Anderson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established in Ollie's name in care of the Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, DeKalb, IL 60115. For information please visit our website www.andersonfuneralhomeltd.com/ or call 815-756-1022.

Uncle Ollie could always make you laugh whether you wanted to or not. His laughter filled the room. His pride in his community was always evident and any visit to Dekalb was filled with Ollie trying to show you everything that had changed since your last visit. Ollie will be missed but will live on in my memories forever.

Ollie had a beautiful spirit and s generous soul. I meet Ollie in the "water class" at the local YMCA. I still chuckle when I think of all of the laughs and the fun that he and I had when we were supposed to be exercising. Instead we were talking and often just being silly and thus getting everyone around us to be silly also. I loved that man, especially his smile, which I will remember always!

I have known Ollie all of my life. We worked together at Seig in the 70's. Always upbeat, with a great sense of humor, Ollie had a heart of gold. A convert to Catholicism, Ollie was a stellar example to those of us born in the faith. Dona eis requiem et perpetua lux.
