ORVILLE KRAHENBUHL Obituary

Orville "Ollie" Krahenbuhl, 92, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.
He was born July 8, 1917, on a farm near Bristol, Ill., the eldest son of John and Gertrude (Gittleson) Krahenbuhl. He married his college sweetheart, Lillian Wickness, on Sept. 19, 1942, at Calvary Lutheran Church in rural Lee.
Ollie was a graduate of Rochelle High School, Class of 1937. He also was a graduate of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, is a member of the NIU Athletic Hall of Fame and was named to several of NIU's All Century athletic teams. He was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School, holding a position on its Administrative Board and serving for many years as an usher.
Ollie served in the Navy and the Army during World War II. He taught school and coached at Harlem High School in Rockford, Shabbona High School and Malta High School, farmed the family farm between Lee and Steward and served as a hail insurance adjustor during summers in the years following his retirement from teaching.
A longtime member of Kishwaukee Country Club, Ollie was an avid golfer and spent his retirement years building golf clubs and repairing golf clubs for friends. He was a member of the American Legion and Rotary International. He and his wife, Lillian, traveled widely around the United States, often on visits to or for activities involving their children and grandchildren. They spent their winters in Arizona from 1981-2001.
He is survived by his five children, Gary (Richey) Krahenbuhl of Tempe, Ariz., James (Jean) Krahenbuhl of Earp, Calif., Scott (Peg) Krahenbuhl of Surprise, Ariz., Debra (Jan) Hueber of Steward and Doug (Sue) Krahenbuhl of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his parents; and his brother, Eugene.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, at Calvary Lutheran Church in rural Lee with the Rev. Doug Opp officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in rural Steward. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Anderson Funeral Home Ltd. in DeKalb.

When I used to go visit my mother at the County Home, it was always a special treat to sit with her in the sun room when Ollie was out there, too. Occasionally, he would join in the conversations a bit. He was obviously a fine man and an exceptional person. Please accept the condolences of my father and myself.
