ARTHUR GETZELMAN Obituary
He was born Oct. 18, 1925, on the family farm in Hampshire Township, the son of Harry and Edna (Helson) Getzelman. He was a 1943 graduate of Burlington Township High School. Art was an Angus-Chianina livestock breeder in the Hampshire area his entire life, and was active in the 4-H, both as a member and later as a 4-H leader. Art loved to bowl and he was a member in many leagues, both in Hampshire and Elgin over the years.
He was the center and the leading scorer for the 1943 Burlington High School's basketball team, which won the district tournament in the Illinois State High School tournament that year. Because of this, Art was elected to the Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
Art was a longtime member of Zion United Methodist Church in Hampshire.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley (nee, Stout), whom he married Nov. 3, 1948, in Burlington; his children, Jean (James) Travi of Amboy, A. Robert (Christine) Getzelman, DVM, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Thomas (Brenda) Getzelman, DVM, and Ann (fiancé, Brian Sebastian) Getzelman, both of Hampshire; seven grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Mitchel of Spokane, Wash.; three brothers, Lyle "Pete" (Betty) Getzelman of Bountiful, Utah, Leroy (Ruth) Getzelman of Hampshire and Richard (Florence) Getzelman of Hinckley; and a sister-in-law, Helen Schultz of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lloyd Getzelman and Donald Getzelman.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Zion United Methodist Church, 157 W. Jefferson St., Hampshire, with Pastor Jim Ketzel officiating. Burial will be at Burlington Township Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, and from 9-10 a.m. Friday, both at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be directed to Zion United Methodist Church, or to the Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
