Bruce James Kremer, 86, of DeKalb, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center. He worked as a professor in the College of Education at Northern Illinois University and retired in 1993.

Bruce was born in Lansing, Michigan, on January 9, 1932, the son of the late Peter and Florence (Perron) Kremer. He married Gertrude M. Kline on July 6, 1957, in Stephenson, Michigan. Bruce grew up in Lansing, attended Michigan State University, earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and later a doctoral degree in educational psychology. Bruce served in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. Upon his return, he worked at the University of Detroit. Then, he joined the staff at Northern Illinois University when he moved to DeKalb in 1967. At NIU, from 1967 to 1993, Bruce primarily taught graduate students to become high school guidance counselors.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Gertrude M. (Kline) Kremer, the two celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July 2017; he also is survived by his five children, Patricia (Gregg) Steevens, Ronald (Jolene) Kremer, Katherine (Douglas) Bishop, Jean (David) Wilson, and David (Joanne) Kremer; he was the beloved grandfather to 13 grandchildren, Nathaniel and Andrew (Natalia) Steevens, Kevin (Kathleen) and Jeffrey (Heather) Kremer, Emily Bishop, Marie (Kevin), Brian (fianc e Victoria) and Amy Wilson, Matthew (Sarah Beth), Michael, Joseph, Thomas and Maria Kremer; six great-grandchildren, Ella Steevens, Caroline and Benjamin Kremer, Calvin Kremer, Oakley and Vida Kremer; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (Elizabeth) Kremer.

There will be a celebration of Bruce's life in a mass at noon on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Christ the Teacher University Parish (Newman Catholic Student Center), 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, IL, 60115, with Fr. Jeremy Trowbridge officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date.
