Donald A. Anderson, 84, of Cherry Valley, Ill., formerly of Genoa, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center in DeKalb.
Born April 27, 1922, in Rockford, he was the son of Adolph and Ellen (Grhan) Anderson.
Donald attended Rockford schools and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific for 3 1/2 years with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown and the USS Douglas Fox. He was awarded nine Battle Stars for his service.
He married Marjorie Loptien on Sept. 12, 1944, in Sycamore. He was a steamfitter, belonging to Union Local 612 and Union Local 501, for more than 50 years. Donald was a business agent for Union Local 612 and was employed by Northern Illinois University for several years.
He is survived by three children, Donald (Pat) Anderson of Genoa, Vicki Brenneman of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kay (Stewart) Parks of Cortland; a granddaughter, Jeri (Michael) Emerick of Rockford; two great-grandchildren, Brenden and Ashley Emerick of Rockford; a sister, Phyllis McElyea of Rockford; two brothers-in-law, L.W. Loptien Jr. of Leesburg, Fla., and Boyd (Mary) Loptien of Genoa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie, in 1996; a sister, Ruth Lindvall; a brother, Norris Anderson; and a son-in-law, Kerry Brenneman, on June 19, 2006.
He was an avid Cubs fan, and Cubs attire at the funeral would be appreciated.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home of Genoa, with the Rev. Timothy Frick officiating. Burial will be at Genoa Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
