Donald Paul Schoo

Donald Paul Schoo, 93, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2018, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

He was born August 30, 1924, in DeKalb, Illinois, at St. Mary Hospital, the son of Albert and Berniece (Fagan) Schoo, Donald married Loraine Flood in July 1949.A veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, Don participated in five battle campaigns: landing on D-Day on Omaha Beach at Normandy in Northern France, in the relief of Bastogne, in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes offensive, the Rhineland and the central Europe campaign. Don compiled a total of 305 days of combat as a machine gunner with the 80th Infantry Division. He received several awards, including the Combat Infantry Badge and two Bronze Star medals. On December 20, 2004, Jacques Chirac, president of the French Republic, named Donald Schoo a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Don was with the first American troops to enter Buchenwald concentration camp at Weimar, Germany. He often taught classes and gave presentations on his battle experiences to many local organizations.

Don was a retired sergeant of the DeKalb Police Department. He served the department from 1947 to 1967. He was formerly employed by the City of DeKalb street department and was manager for the DeKalb Airport, maintenance for the Illinois Tollway System and maintenance for Northern Illinois University, from which he retired. Don was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sycamore VFW Post 5768, Sycamore American Legion and St. Mary Catholic Church, where he worked cemetery maintenance and served on the cemetery board.

He is survived by his son, Daniel Schoo; and his sister, JoAnn Schoo Irving of DeKalb; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine; his parents; and daughter-in-law, Donna Schoo.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Pine Street, DeKalb, with Fr. James Parker celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion Post 66 and Sycamore VFW Post 5768. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with a Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Donald P. Schoo Memorial Fund, sent to the Schoo Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.
