ELSIE IRENE APPERSON

1919 - 2011 | Obituary Condolences
Elsie Irene Apperson, 91, of DeKalb, Ill., died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at home with her family at her bedside.
Born Dec. 30, 1919, in Roachdale, Ind., Elsie grew up throughout the Midwest as the daughter of a Presbyterian minister who served congregations in Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri. She attended grade school in Denison, Iowa, and graduated from high school in 1937 in Independence, Iowa. Elsie then attended Independence Junior College and Coffeeville Junior College in Kansas, eventually graduating from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1941 with a teaching degree.
On Dec. 28, 1941, she married Lester D. "LD" Apperson of Chicago, whom she had met a few years earlier while visiting the Century of Progress Chicago Exposition of 1933. The newlyweds first lived in Greenwich Village, NYC, as LD worked as a research chemist for Colgate Palmolive. They then moved to Madison, N.J., where Elsie raised two children and worked on her master's degree in library science and various volunteer endeavors.
A member of AAUW, Elsie loved books, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and specialized reference works. She also enjoyed needle work, PBS series and researching antique furniture. As a Depression-Era child, she never met a box she couldn't find a use for.
A beloved sister, mother and grandmother, her generosity and love for her family will be missed by all her loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Apperson; her parents, Fred and Jennie Hamlin; her sister, Lena Swain of Soldier, Iowa; and her brothers, Glenn Hamlin of Del Norte, Colo., and Dr. Wendell Hamlin of Mineral Point, Wis.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Richard (Joan) Hamlin of Naples, Fla.; her daughter, Judith (Steve) Daiger of Houston, Texas; her son, Larry (Nancy) Apperson of DeKalb; her two grandchildren, Katy Daiger of Austin, Texas, and Michael (Daniel'e) Apperson of North Aurora; and a number of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the United States.
A private family visitation and service will be held on Monday, April 18, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. A graveside ceremony will immediately follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to DeKalb County Hospice, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115, or the Hamlin Memorial Scholarship Fund at George Williams College, 350 Constance Blvd., P.O. Box 210, Williams Bay, WI 53191.
