Gerard J. McLain, 80, of Sycamore died Friday, March 9, 2018 at his home.

He was born March 27, 1937 in St. Louis, MO to Eugene C. and Marie E. (Conroy) McLain, Sr. He married Carol (Mowry) Howe on Feb. 17, 1977. He was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church of Sycamore and served in the National Guard from 1955-1963. Gerard had many jobs as a young man to help support his family. He started working at Woolworth's and then began his career in retail at Ben Franklin, where he became the owner of the stores in Sycamore and Oregon, IL for over 40 years. During that time he opened Little Ben's Toy Store and the Stylist Beauty Salon. Along with several other stores in Sycamore- Fabricana, Lady Ben's Clothing Store, Franklin's Frame Shop and the Super 1 Dollar Store. He was very active in the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce and started "Discover Sycamore" to benefit the community.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; his children, Colleen (David) Lindgren, Kathryn (David) West, Bernadette (Ken) Wnek, Michael (Colleen) McLain, Daniel (Beth) McLain, Melody (Chris) Stanbery, April Olson and Gene Howe; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Leo (Charlene) McLain; two sisters, Loretta Pennington and Theresa (Jim) Kendall; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Leona McLain; one brother, Eugene McLain, Jr.; and one sister, Mary Fields.

His visitation will be on Wednesday, March 14th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL. with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM with Rev. Len Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.
