DeKALB – Harley Edward Radtke, 94, of DeKalb, Ill., formerly of Waterman, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb. He was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Nashua, Iowa, the son of Edward and Frances (Perry) Radtke.|
Harley was united in marriage May 30, 1943, in San Diego, Calif., to the former Mildred Grace Houghtby and they spent the next 66 happy years of their lives together until her passing June 11, 2009. He served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1951, Harley and Mildred moved their family from San Diego to DeKalb County, so he could pursue his love of farming. He was, for many years, the owner and operator of Radtke Refrigeration Service in Waterman, and a former member of the Waterman Business Association in Waterman. Mr. Radtke was a longtime and active member of the Foursquare Church in DeKalb, where he enjoyed planting and tending the flowers. Harley was an avid golfer and after his retirement he was the groundskeeper at the Countryside West Golf Course. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be missed deeply by his family and many friends.
Harley is survived by his children, Linda (John) Dersch of DeKalb, Richard (Nancy) Radtke of Waterman and Christine Radtke of Poplar Grove; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Wanda) Radtke of Payson, Ariz.; sister, Roberta Atkinson of Sheffield, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Frances Radtke; wife, Mildred Radtke; and brother, Lyle Radtke.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Foursquare Church, 210 Grove St., DeKalb. A military graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Old English Cemetery, Route 30, West of Tower Road, Shabbona.
The family requests that memorials be made to the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.
