John R. Nelson

Jack was born April 8, 1930 in DeKalb Illinois, the son of Ray C. and Helen (Harrington) Nelson and died May 25, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.

Jack graduated from DeKalb High School in 1947 and attend Iowa State University, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in Poultry Science. Jack was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and a member of Cardinal Key a men's honorary recognizing service to the school. He married Barbara M. Dimmen on March 24, 1951; served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from September 1951 thru September 1953.

Jack worked for 40 years at "DeKalb Ag" in seed sales, poultry marketing, and management, and retired in 1992 as President of DeKalb Poultry Research. Jack was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in DeKalb. Jack was always community minded and served on the Board of Directors for several community organizations, including the Union Cemetery Board, The Jacob Haish Memorial Hospital Board, Castle Bank Board. Jack was also a founding member of the Board of the DeKalb Area Retirement Center (Oak Crest), and the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

Jack enjoyed fishing and got a lot of enjoyment in taking his sons and grandsons fishing for Walleye and Northern Pike at Gunisao Lake in Manitoba Canada.

Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Ray (Janice) Nelson of DeKalb, Bryan (Carol) Nelson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; sisters, Joan (Tom) Hancock of Golden, Colorado, Carol Cooper of Scottsdale Arizona; grandsons, Michael (Maria) Nelson of Gurnee, Alex Nelson of Dallas Texas; two great-grandsons, Xavier and Viktor Nelson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Ray C. and Helen Nelson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 1 at DeKalb Area Retirement Center, Oak Crest Chapel, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb with the Rev. Jonathan Crail of First United Methodist Church in DeKalb officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 31, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb and 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Oak Crest Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the John R. Nelson Memorial Fund, sent to the Nelson Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.
