Lois Charlotte Markus Obituary
Lois Charlotte Markus

Born: February 2, 1924; in Chicago, IL

Died: June 8, 2018; DeKalb, IL

Lois Charlotte (Wendorf) Markus, 94, of Sycamore, Illinois, passed away Friday, June 8, 2018, at Pine Acres Rehab & Living Center, DeKalb.

Born February 2, 1924, in Chicago, the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Drews) Wendorf, Lois married Clarence "Red" Markus on November 11, 1948, at Jefferson Park Lutheran Church in Chicago.

Lois was a homemaker and gifted organist. After graduating from Taft High School, she attended North Park College to study music. She met "Red" while they both worked at Pyramid Mouldings in Chicago. They settled in Chicago, and one of the first pieces of "furniture" they purchased for their house was a Hammond organ, despite not having any other furniture. They later moved to Mount Prospect to raise their family, and the weekend-music-jam sessions in their basement were memorable, especially when Lois would play "Begin the Beguine" on the organ and piano at the same time. Despite having several health issues throughout her life, she always kept a positive attitude and persevered even until the very end. Her smile and gentleness will be carried as a lasting memory by those who knew and loved her.

Some of the highlights of her life were the years she and Red spent raising their family in Mount Prospect, and associating with wonderful family, friends and neighbors; thoroughly enjoying their retirement years in El Dorado in Santa Fe, N.M., and then moving back to Sycamore to be nearer to family.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years; brother, Ralph Wendorf of Albuquerque, NM; children, Bradley (Jeanne) Markus and Barbara (Esteban) Garza; grandchildren, David Markus, Erika Rahden, Andrew (Michelle) Rahden and Doug (Jessica) Rahden; great-grandchildren, Kristine, Madeline, Matthew, Wade and Alexander Rahden; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack (Adeline) Wendorf; and sister-in-law, Hilda Wendorf.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Friday, June 15, at Quiram-Sycamore Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Friday at the funeral home, followed by cremation, according to Lois' wishes.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations to Northwestern Medicine Hospice Music Therapy Program, 2727 Sycamore Road, DeKalb, IL 60115.

Lois, via her family, expresses heartfelt thanks to her many caregivers and medical professionals over the years; she called them her angels: "We love you and thank you for your dedicated service and caring. And now, 'Begin the Beguine.'"
