DeKALB – Mary Evelyn Phillips, 70, of DeKalb, Ill., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.|
Born Aug. 4, 1942, in Lincoln, Neb., the daughter of Robert C. and Neva L. (Page) Arthur, she married William D. "Bill" Phillips on Sept. 4, 1965, in DeKalb.
A 1961 graduate of DeKalb High School, Mary Evelyn was a member of First Baptist Church, DeKalb.
Mary Evelyn loved children and wanted them to know Jesus. She led many children's ministries, including Good News Radio, Joy Club, Gideon Boys, HIS Club, day camp, bus ministry, Family Night and CEF clubs. Her heart of service to all people brought her to Christian Women's Club, Hope Haven, hospice, therapeutic clowning and many hospitality ministries.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Suzanne (John Stuart) Phillips of Seattle, Wash., Timothy (Carol) Phillips of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bethany (Matt) Macarus of DeKalb and Nathan (Jillian) Phillips of Genoa; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Charles (Sharon) Arthur of Portland, Ore., and Robert (Kathy) Arthur of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Carol (Jack) McConaghie of Oglesby; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents and grandson, Kieran.
The celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at First Baptist Church, 349 S. Third St., DeKalb. If possible, ladies, in honor of Mary Evelyn, wear your favorite hat. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of service at the church. Private family burial will be at Ohio Grove Cemetery, Sycamore.
