Michael Thomas (VanBladel) Fick passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at his home in Sycamore.

He was born March 28, 1944 in Oak Park, IL. In 1961, he met his future wife, Sharon. In 1963, much to the surprise of his parents, who were vacationing at the time, Michael decided to postpone college and enlisted in the Navy instead. He served for four years on the USS Forrestal.

On May 29, 1965, he and Sharon married in Elmhurst, IL. After being discharged in 1967, Michael did continue his education as previously planned. He attended Elmhurst College, and then went on to earn his master's degree. In 1974, their first child, Matthew, was born, followed by daughter Julie in 1976. The family lived in Glen Ellyn for 17 years and then in St. Charles for the next 22 years. Michael and Sharon moved to Sycamore in 2015.

Early in his career, Michael served as a probation officer in the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit. In 1984, he opened ABM Systems, an outpatient behavioral health treatment center. For 20 years, he served as its president and clinical director, eventually opening five locations throughout DuPage, Kane, and DeKalb counties. After he retired, he worked as a DUI counselor. Michael enjoyed fishing, gardening, photography, and sarcasm.

Michael is preceded in death by his father, Edward VanBladel; and his parents, Ruth and George Fick.

He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Sharon (Prince) Fick; his son, Matthew (Ann) Fick; his daughter, Julie (Jason) Kuffer; and his grandchildren, Hayden and Cole.
