Samuel Douglas Brakefield, 27 of Genoa, Ill., died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, in DeKalb.
He was born March 24, 1981, in Cuba Township, Lake County, Ill., the son of Philip and Christi (O'Dell) Brakefield.
Sam worked in construction, with various companies over the years. He was also employed as a painter for Pittsley Realty. He was a graduate of the Genoa-Kingston High School, Class of 1999. He also attended Spoon River and McHenry County community colleges.
Sam is survived by his mother and stepfather, Christi (Ronald) Slavenas of Genoa; his father, Philip Brakefield; a sister, Sarah N. Brakefield of Genoa; two stepbrothers, Eric (Lori) Slavenas of Kingston and Marcus Slavenas of Champaign; his grandparents, Casey (Carlene) O'Dell of Ohio; many uncles and aunts, Donald (Christine) Prestley of Crystal Lake, Ray Brown of Alabama, Howard (Sandy) Brakefield of Island Lake, Shirley (Gene) Nibblett of Summiton, Ala., Sue Parkey of Belvidere, Joe (Bea) Cotton of Naperville, Casey (Candi) O'Dell Jr. of California, Julius Grazina of Skokie and Erika (Ed) Brooks of Oak Lawn; a niece; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents; his grandmother, Halina Dilys; a stepbrother, Brian Slavenas; and an aunt, Helen Brown.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Faith United Methodist Church, 325 S. Stott St. in Genoa, with the Rev. Daniel Diss officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Faith United Methodist Church in Genoa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Art Department at the Genoa-Kingston High School in care of Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main St., Genoa, IL 60135.
