William "Bill" Chamness, 82, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Bill was born March 23, 1936, in Bradley, Illinois, the son of William and Louise (Holzhauer) Chamness. He lived in Bradley until after high school when he enlisted in the United States Navy. Bill served four years as a gunner's mate on the U.S.S. Abbot in charge of all small arms. He married Margaret "Peggy" Neville on September 25, 1965, in Dwight, Illinois.

After his service, Bill went to work for A.O. Smith Harvestore and moved his family to DeKalb in 1974. He retired in 1997 after 43 years of service. Bill was a dedicated member of the DeKalb Evening Lions Club, serving over 56 years. He was awarded the prestigious Melvin Fellow Award for his commitment and service. Bill was also an active member of St. Mary Church in DeKalb, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at the Northwestern Cancer Center in DeKalb.

Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy; his three children, Karen Isham, Lisa Angel and Michael Chamness, all of DeKalb; four loving grandchildren, Ali (Evan Froehlich) Isham, Austin Isham, Lauren and Matthew Angel; and his twin sister, Shirley Fish of Hollywood, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Verna Walters and Bobbie Lamb.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Pine Street, DeKalb, with Fr. Dean Russell and Deacon Armando Regalado officiating. Following Mass, full military honors will be provided by DeKalb American Legion Post 66. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with a wake service at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the William L. Chamness Memorial Fund, addressed to the Chamness Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.
