LES SUBERI ECHEVIA Obituary
ROCKFORD – The Rev. Les Suberi Echevia, 77, of Rockford, Illinois, went home with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 5, 2014, after being a resident at Presence Cor Mariae in Rockford.
The Rev. Les was born in Tagbilaran City in the Philippines. He graduated from Divine Word College in Tagbilaran City in the Philippines with a BSE and AB.
The Rev. Les was ordained by Bishop Manuel Mascarinas on Dec. 20, 1961, at Candihay Bohol, Philippines. He served as an associated pastor in the Diocese of Tagbilaran for four years before joining the Philippine Foreign Mission Society. He was sent to Thailand and worked for five years as a missionary with the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers in Nakorn Ratchasima Diocese, northeast of Bangkok.
The Rev. Les came to the United States and entered the military as a chaplain in the National Guard and became a citizen of the United States. After 16 years in the military, serving in Desert Storm, he came to the Diocese of Rockford and was a coordinator and sacramental moderator for Hispanic Ministry for the DeKalb Deanery. He was then assigned as administrator and then Pastor of Saints Peter & Paul Parish in Virgil. The Rev. Les retired from active ministry on July 1, 2008.
The Rev. Les is survived by his brothers, Apalinario Echevia, 81, and Theofilo Echevia, 71, and sisters, Especiosa Racho, 69, and Fe Esperanza E. Lungay, 68, all living in the Philippines.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5N939 Meridith Road, Virgil. The Most Rev. David J. Malloy, Bishop of the Rockford Diocese, will be the main celebrant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday June 13, and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the church. Burial will take place immediately following the Mass at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Virgil with full military honor guard provided by the DeKalb American Legion, V.F.W. and AmVets.
