Sister Marianne Nilges, SSSF, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.|
She was born in Aurora, Illinois, on September 7, 1930, to Theodore and Elizabeth (Poss) Nilges. Sister Marianne entered the convent in the fall of 1943 and spent her life as a School Sister of St. Francis.
Sister Marianne taught for many years at Decatur, Johnsburg, and Addison, Il, as well as St. Joseph School in Aurora and St. Peter and Paul School in Naperville. She was the Religious Education Director at St. Mary's in DeKalb and at St. Catherine's in Genoa, Illinois, where she worked with her brother, Rev. Harold Nilges. When he became ill, Sister cared for him for many years until his death in 2006, whereupon she retired to Campbellsport, Wisconsin. In 2013 she moved to Villa St. Francis in Milwaukee.
Sister Marianne was a generous and dedicated teacher and musician, and shared her gifts with all. Many were touched by her kindness, enthusiasm, and sense of humor.
She is survived by one brother, Anthony Nilges of Aurora, one nephew, David Nilges of Aurora, and five nieces: Sharon (Gib) Nevels of Phoenix, Rosemary (Dick) Hauser of Aurora, Cathy (Roger lee) Kott of Warrenville, Bonnie (Arthur) Vargas of Aurora, and Marsha Bock of Aurora, as well as many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rev. Harold Nilges, and her sister-in-law, Imelda (Pickert) Nilges.
The Funeral Mass for Sister Marianne will be at the Franciscan Motherhouse in Milwaukee, 1501 S. Layton Blvd., on Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. An additional Mass will be said at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, 320 S. Stott in Genoa, Illinois on Friday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Donald Ahles officiating. Burial will be at the St. Catherine Cemetery in Genoa.
