Frank Edward Thomas Obituary
Frank E. Thomas

Born: April 15, 1927; in Oak Park, IL

Died: Aug. 13, 2014; in DeKalb, IL

Frank Edward Thomas, 87, died Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb, IL.

Frank was born April 15, 1927, in Oak Park, IL, the son of Frank and Ruth Thomas. He married Shirley Louy on September 9, 1950, in Maywood, IL. They later made their home in Elmhurst, IL for 28 years before moving to DeKalb, IL in 1994.

Frank graduated from Proviso High School in Maywood in 1945, and then served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1945-1947. Upon his return home, he joined Alcoa Corp. where he served a five-year apprenticeship as a tool and die maker. He later was hired by the trade union as a Business Representative. From 1962-1987, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor in Chicago where he specialized in government funded job training programs and monitoring sub-contractors.

He retired at age 60 and spent his time caring for his elderly parents and performing volunteer work. After moving to DeKalb, he volunteered for almost 20 years at the First Congregational United Church of Christ by overseeing building maintenance and providing his handyman skills.

Frank really felt blessed by the full life he had, his marriage to Shirley, and his entire circle of family and friends. He possessed a strong work ethic, appreciated humor, and enjoyed discussing history and politics.

Frank is survived by his three children, Eileen (Tom) Dettman of Cortland, Larry (Bev) Thomas of Crystal Lake, and Barbara (Jim) Fox of DeKalb; one brother, Larry (Nancy) Thomas of Findlay, OH; grandchildren, Glen (Beth) Dettman, Richard (Kim) Dettman, Thomas Dettman Jr, Brandon (Cheryl) Thomas, Katelyn (Alan) Schwing, and Karlene (Mike) Ernat; and seven great-grandchildren, Hannah, GlenTom, Caleb, Carter, Grayson, Frank, and baby girl Thomas due this month.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 62 years, Shirley; and grandson, Brent Thomas. A memorial service will be held in celebration of Frank's life at 11:30am on Saturday, August 30, 2014, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ of DeKalb, 615 North First Street, DeKalb, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made on Frank's behalf to Oakcrest-DeKalb Area Retirement Center, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive, DeKalb, IL 60115; or the First Congregational United Church of Christ of DeKalb.

The family would like to thank all caregivers who supported Frank and provided quality care over the past year since Shirley passed.
