After graduation, Harriet was accepted to the Cadet Nurse Corps program. She received her nursing training at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, part of the Mayo Clinic Health system, and graduated with a Diploma in Nursing.

Harriet worked at the former DeKalb County Lung Clinic until her retirement in 1981.

Harriet was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, DeKalb, where she was a member of the Church Women's Circle. Harriet was also a long-time volunteer at the Country Store, a resale store that supports the programs of the Family Service Agency of DeKalb County, the organization at which her late husband, Floyd, served as executive director for 14 years.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Nancy Flowers (Terry McCabe); sons, Bruce (Janet) Flowers and David (Lynn) Flowers; grandchildren, Anne (Charles) Lavin, Hazel Flowers-McCabe, Tyler Flowers-McCabe, Melissa (Dan) Pepper and Matthew Flowers. Also surviving are her sister, Katherine Beyer of Mankato, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Marilyn Flowers of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, in 2009.
