1921 - 2009 | Obituary Condolences
Mary E. Claxton, 87, of DeKalb, Ill., formerly of Malta, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1921, in Malta, she was the daughter of Alva and Anna (Skelly) Freeman. Mary married Phillip Claxton on Oct. 24, 1939, in Malta; he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1977.
Mary was a retired secretary from the Northern Illinois University Lab School and Field House. She was a lifelong resident of Malta and a member of Malta United Methodist Church. Mary was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan. She graduated from Malta High School in 1939.
Survivors include a son, James (Lynn) Claxton of Louisiana; daughter, JoAnn Hackbarth of DeKalb; grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Claxton, Todd (Shelly) Claxton, Jerry Claxton, Matt (Jessica) Claxton, Kevin (Rachelle) Claxton, Eric (Amy) Mattis, Troy (Katy) Mattis and Nicole (Chris) Wiehle; step-grandchildren, Donna Frahely, Brian Chester, Danny (Jessica) Chester and Holly Chester; 29 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phillip; daughter, Janice Arwood; brother, Chester Freeman; and in-laws, Harry and Carrie Claxton.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at Ronan-Moore-Finch Funeral Home, with Pastor Robert L. Vaughn officiating. Burial will be at Malta Cemetery in Malta. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to DeKalb County Hospice.
