Chester "Chet" I. Gillis, 92, of Creston, Ill., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Franklin Grove Nursing Center. |
Born Aug. 4, 1918, in rural Creston, at their family home, the son of William Irvin and Myrtle Mae Petry Gillis, he graduated from Rochelle Township High School in 1937, then served in the European Theater during World War II as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, 787th Field Artillery Battalion. He married Mary L. Vesta on Oct. 29, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran, Creston; she preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Donald.
Before retiring, Chet worked for Standard Oil Home Delivery and then in Central Receiving at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.
His memberships include St. John's Lutheran Church, Creston; past member of Creston Booster Club, Creston Park Board, Creston Village Board and Woodlawn Cemetery Association; he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3878, Lee American Legion Post 1253, and the 40/8 Voiture 207 of DeKalb.
Survivors include his two sons, Mark Gillis of Rochelle and Steve (Pam) Gillis of Crystal Lake;
daughter, Mary Jo (Marvin) Metzger of Rochelle; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Gillis, Jennifer (Matt) VanOstrand, David (Dawn) Gillis, Danelle (Daniel) Riederer, Nora (Justin) Brooks, Gabriel Metzger and Austin Gillis; great-grandson, Matthew Gillis; sister, Lois Turkington; and sister-in-law, Martha Gillis.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Creston, with the Rev. Ron Larsen officiating and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Creston, with military services provided by VFW Post 3878. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle.
