GENOA – Kenneth R. "Ray" Atkinson, 75, of Genoa, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford.|
Born Oct. 20, 1937, in Sims, the son of Bill and Inez (Cantrell) Atkinson, he married Avalon Alderks on Oct. 22, 1955.
Ray was an over-the-road truck driver for many years. In his spare time, he loved to do yardwork, garden and cut his grass with his riding lawn mower.
Ray is survived by his wife, Avalon of Genoa; five sons, Kenneth Jr. "Beaver" of Janesville, Wis., George (Brenda) of Kingston, Brian (Julie) of Hampshire, Ralph (Beverly) of Genoa and Kevin (Judy) of Belvidere; 10 grandchildren, Michael Ray, Daniel, Jason Ray, George Jr., Nicholas Ray, Jacob, Marcus Ray, Alyssa, Shannon Ray and Desiree; five great-grandchildren, Kameron, Elizabeth, Loretta, Kylie and Karlie; seven siblings, John, Grover, May, Donald "Punch," Louella, Irene and Andy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter in infancy, Loretta; and one brother, Lester.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main St., Genoa, with the Rev. James Freund officiating. Burial will be at White Rock Cemetery in Kings, Ill. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Slater-Butala Funeral Home.
