1923 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
DeKALB – Gene Duncan, 89, of DeKalb, Ill., died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb.
Born Sept. 11, 1923, in Centralia, the son of Herbert Lee and Carrie E. (Copple) Duncan, Gene married Margaret Ann Hart on April 18, 1944, in DeKalb, and later married Luella Ondo on July 8, 2006, also in DeKalb.
Gene was a former state of Illinois-licensed mortician, involved in farming, and owned a farm-equipment and supplies dealership. He also was a multiline insurance salesman and did light carpentry and remodeling. He enjoyed his family, woodworking and golfing.
Gene was a member of First Baptist Church, DeKalb, a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II, and was a charter member and past president of the DeKalb Lions Club.
Music was an important part of Gene's life, and he was known for being the "Singing Insurance Man" on his own radio program for 17 years. He also belonged to the singing group Witnesses, which sang all over northern Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Luella; daughters, Becki Dennis (Bob Hutchinson) of Machesney Park, Peggy (Dan) Waddell of Buffalo Grove and Carrie (Keith) Kerr of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; stepdaughter, Star (Jack) Wakey of DeKalb; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Eleanor Ester of DeKalb; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Ann; grandson, Tony; and brother, Paul.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at First Baptist Church, DeKalb, with the memorial service following at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Gary Shields and the Rev. John Peterson officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at Fairview Park Cemetery, with full military honors by a DeKalb County Honor Guard. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Gene Duncan Memorial Fund, sent in care of First Baptist Church, 349 S. Third St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
