Obituary Condolences

Gerald Edwards, 85, of DeKalb, Ill., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 8, 1922, in Lee, he was son of Arthur and Leila Edwards.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Jerry farmed for more than 36 years in the DeKalb County and Boone County areas. He raised registered Chester White pigs and registered Polled Hereford cattle. He and his three sons were the winners of many champion ribbons at the Boone County Fair over the years.
Even after retiring from farm life, he remained very active. He was employed by the Boone County Conservation District, doing many jobs, but his favorite was working in the gardens. He was known for his prize-winning gladiolas at many county fairs. His rough and burly hands, made that way by the hard work of farm life, arranged some of the most beautiful floral arrangements entered at the fair. He would often deliver his flowers to friends in the hospital or nursing homes.
He was an active member of the Belvidere Garden Club, Rockford Pigeon Club, Rockford Coin Club, Illinois Farm Bureau, Boone County Beef Association and, most important, the Crosswind Community Church of Genoa. He loved seeing his grandchildren's fair entries that varied from knitting to horses. Jerry loved his church family and enjoyed participating in any and every event possible, including playing softball.
After the death of his first wife, Jerry remarried on Jan. 6, 1990. He married Anna (Catron) Edwards, a wonderful woman with whom he shared many happy years.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Ann, of DeKalb; three sons, David (Dulcia) Edwards of South Beloit, Dale (Cheryl) Edwards of Beloit, Wis., and Daniel (Pamela) Edwards of Sycamore; six grandchildren, Charlotte, Jacob, Abigail, Heidi, McKenzie and Karagan; two brothers, Arthur Edwards of Florida and Duane Edwards of Joliet; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Marilyn (Voreis) Edwards, and his parents, Arthur and Leila Edwards.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main St., Genoa, IL 60135, with Pastor Jim Freund officiating. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at the funeral home.
Memorials for Gerald Edwards can be made in care of Crosswind Community Church, 13100 Cherry Road, Genoa, IL 60135.
