Elmon B. Heltsley, 93, of Aztec passed from this life Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 in Aztec. He was born July 3, 1920 in Calhoun, Ky. to Omar and Flora Heltsey.
Elmon was a peaceful, quiet, distinguished man, who served God, his country and family, He lived a full and happy life, He didn't have a lot of formal education, but he was very well read and valued education as a way to improve one's life.
During WWII , Elmon served his country in the Army, 2nd Armored Division, 92 AFA, Battery C, hell on wheels. He was in all the major battles from Africa, Normandy, Battle of the Bulge to Germany in his half track "CanDee". When he returned home, he made a commitment to live his life well and in such a way as to honor those who lost their life. He served in Korea during the Korean War in the Air Force and retired from the Military during the Vietnam War as a MSGT.
Elmon then worked in supply for the Civil Service at the Port Hueneme and Point Migh, California. When he retired he enjoyed music, dancing and traveling throughout the United States and attending 2nd Armored Reunions. He took great delight in his grandchildren, who have wonderful memories.
Elmon was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; parents, Omar and Flora Heltsley; three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his girlfriend, Evelyn Young; daughters Candace F. Heltsley-Brannan (David Rick Brannan) and Deborah L Backe; grandchildren Matthew D Brannan (Grace) and seven great-grandsons, Jaclyn K. Brannan, Jonathan R. Backe, Jared B.D. Backe and Jason L. Backe.
A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 3 at Cope Memorial Chapel in Farmington. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4 at Cope Memorial Chapel with Rev. Kathy Potter officiating.
Elmon will be buried at Emberry Church in Clifty, Ky.
Pallbearers are Jonathan R. Backe, Jared B.D. Backe, Jason L. Backe, Dennis Pioche, Pat Graham and Matthew D. Brannan.
Donations may be made to the Farmington Senior Center and Bloomfield Methodist Church.
Elmon's care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St. in Farmington, 505-327-5142. Those who wish to express their condolences may do so at www.serenityandcompany.com.

I/we had our ups and downs. I always liked Elmon, and respected him as best I could. I am truly saddened by his passing. he is in a better place now, smiling down, and guiding his family from above.
