Alvin Clarkie passed away Oct. 21, 2012, at his home in Westminster, Colo. Alvin "AI" was born June 24, 1947, in Farmington to Steven and Pauline Clarkie. He was born to the Bit'ah'nii Clan and born for Nakai Dine'.
AI graduated high school in 1965 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps
Like his father, Steven (WWII US Army) and favorite Uncle, Billy Smith (WWII USMC), AI was a Veteran of a Foreign War. After boot camp, he was sent to North Central Vietnam in 1967 with the 3rd Marine Division. He was involved with the Vietnamese and Tet Counteroffensives of 1967-68. Sgt. Alvin Clarkie was Honorably Discharged in 1970.
AI began his career with AT &T (1970-2000) in Albuquerque and retired in Denver, Colo. He enjoyed handball, golfing, fishing, photography and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his father, Steven; grandmothers, Elizabeth Teller, Katie Woody and Nannie Curley Begay; grandfathers, Jack Smith and Jim Curley Begay and many other beloved relatives.
AI is survived by his mother, Pauline Clarkie, of Farmington; sisters, Pattie Bedonie (Tim), of Farmington, Vivian Atcitty (Leonard), of Albuquerque and Sylvia Tso (Kirby), of Kirtland; brothers, David Clarkie and Gene Clarkie of Farmington and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Interment will be in the Santa Fe National Cemetery 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.
