James Harry Smith(1946 - 2014)

James H. Smith, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Odessa, Texas. He was born at the Oxford Store in Oxford, Colo.
Jim graduated from Ignacio High School in 1964. After spending a couple of years exercising race horses in Durango, Colo., he enlisted in the U.S. Army and flew Cobra helicopters in Vietnam. He received several honors, including a Distinguish Flying Cross, for his service in Vietnam.
Jim was Exalted Ruler at the Farmington Elks Lodge from 1996 to 1997. He received All-State Inter Guard in 1994.
Jim is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna; daughter, Storme Smith; step-son, Dax Lujan and wife Katie; grandson, Riker Lujan; and sisters, Shirley Martin and Bonnie Cummins. He has numerous nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers.
Jim had become an animal activist and supported Doberman rescue groups as well as other animal rescue groups. It had been his plan to make part of his place in Odessa, Texas, a refuge for horses.
Jim was a generous, family-loving and patriotic man. One of his favorite things to do was take his family to the PBR finals in Las Vegas, Nev., every October.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Farmington Elks Lodge, No. 1747, 801 Municipal Drive.
