Carmen Tanner, 89, of St. George, Utah, and former Cortez resident, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at the Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George, with family members surrounding her. She was born Sept. 29, 1919, in St. Johns, Ariz., the fourth of nine children born to Junius Cardon and Mae Whiting.
Carmen's family moved in 1927 to Kirtland, where she grew up. It was there that she met her husband, Halworth Tanner. They were married on Sept. 13, 1939, in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Halworth and Carmen raised five children and devotedly supported each other in numerous church callings and in service to the community. During their life together, they lived in Allison, Bayfield and, finally, Cortez, where they were in the flour milling business. Carmen lost Halworth in 1997. Since that time, she has resided at their home in St. George, with her beloved sister, Lyn Russon.
Carmen was a great example of service, sacrifice, and devotion to family, church, neighbors and friends. She was the supreme homemaker and her favorite pastime was enjoying her family.
Carmen was preceded in death by her husband, Halworth; her parents, Junius and Mae Cardon; her five brothers, Wig, Bob, LaMar, Elwood, and Dee; and by her son, Leonard.
She is survived by her three sisters, Irene Christiansen, Ethelyn (Lyn) Russon, and LaVerne Tueller; two of her sons, Trent and Gary Tanner; her two daughters, Linda Enos and Vicki Dowell; 28 grandchildren; and 63 great-grandchildren.
