Cynthia Ann (Duncan) Barnes Obituary
Cynthia Ann (Duncan) Barnes, "Mama Cindy," of Farmington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013. She fought a courageous and heroic battle against breast cancer for nearly 12 years. Cindy will be greatly missed by her family, friends, coworkers and loved ones.
Cindy was born in Coleman, Texas, to A.V. and Patricia Duncan on Nov. 16, 1958. Her family moved to San Juan County soon thereafter, where she resided for the rest of her life.
Cindy graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1977, and later married her high school sweetheart, Alan Barnes. They were planning to celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary in February.
Cindy is preceded in death by her nephew, Marc Duncan. She is survived by her parents, A.V. and Pat, of Bloomfield; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sandy and Margaret Barnes of Bloomfield.
Anyone who knew Cindy knows that children meant the world to her. She is survived by her children: Shellie and Mike Patscheck, Jessica Barnes and Mando Chavez, and Christopher Barnes and Devonte Barnes. She also leaves behind her precious granddaughter, Olivia Chavez. In addition, she leaves behind 56 foster children, each of whom she loved as her own, including her beloved Jaeson Hamlin and Zachery Boyd. She will also be greatly missed by Tony Garcia, who considered her the mother of his heart.
Cindy cherished time spent with her brothers, Jack (and sister-in-law, Debbie) Duncan and Kelly Duncan.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Surprise visits and phone calls from her niece, Carrie Ann Becker, meant the world to her.
Cindy also leaves behind a group of best friends who she loved dearly: Betsy Fahrion, Tammie Nelson, Staci Baysinger, Rena Bibo, Janelle Leslie and Irene Garcia.
Cindy will be remembered as a Girl Scout leader, cheerleading coach, basketball coach, homeroom mom and mentor.
She loved going to work and helping people. She worked as an accountant at Smith, Oldfield, and Associates (later named Steve Oldfield and Associates) for more than 26 years. Cindy enjoyed camping and hiking, but more than anything, being with her family and friends. She lived a life of faith and hope. She touched the lives of countless people with her loving nature and positive outlook.
The family wishes to express their most sincere gratitude to Dr. Jim Neidhart, Dr. Syed Kazmi, Shawna, Erin, Lauren and Rosemarie at San Juan Oncology Associates, who have been there every step of this battle and became a part of our family.
A celebration of Cindy's life will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Mesa View Baptist Church. Per Cindy's request, the family asks that everyone wear colorful or pink attire to celebrate her life. Final resting place will be at Memory Gardens.
A reception will follow at Mesa View Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Cindy's memory to the Cathy Lincoln Memorial Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 110 Farmington, NM 87499.
