Emmett Taylor Walling, 89, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. He was born on May 18, 1924, in Farmington, to Emmett Taylor Walling and Ella Baughman Walling.
Mr. Walling was a graduate of Farmington High school, upon graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army, he served in the Army Chemical Corps, and during World War II, at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Farmington for 73 years and served in many other volunteer positions, including 30 years in the church choir. He served as the Sunday school superintendent, teacher, youth sponsor, and a member of Methodist Men and AWOL class. He was a 35-year, dedicated employee for Southern Union Company, where he worked as a chief chemist and retired in 1986. He was a member of the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM-E19 committee). He served two terms as a San Juan County Commissioner, on the San Juan Hospital Board; as well as other volunteer positions.
Mr. Walling is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen Walling; son, Stuart Walling and his wife, Penny of Tulsa, Okla.; three grandchildren, Tara Rose Breckenridge, Randall Wayne Breckenridge and Richard Dale Breckenridge and his wife, Kathryn; one nephew, Charles Walling and wife, Ana; brother-in-law, Loyal C. Park and his wife, Mary Alice along with their family; niece, Rosanne and Ross Jones and their daughters, Emily, Carrie and Rachel; and nephew, Devon and Ala Park and their son, Dragos; great-niece, Tawnya Starr Wilkerson and husband, Jay; and great-nephew; Christopher Walling; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by son, Jeffrey Lou Walling; parents; Emmett Walling and Ella Melissa Baughman Walling Woods and step-father, Louis P. Woods; and brother; Wayne Walling.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, at the First United Methodist Church, 808 N. Monterey Ave. in Farmington.
Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery.
