James H. Smith, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Odessa, Texas. He was born at the Oxford Store in Oxford, Colo.
Jim graduated from Ignacio High School in 1964. After spending a couple of years exercising race horses in Durango, Colo., he enlisted in the U.S. Army and flew Cobra helicopters in Vietnam. He received several honors, including a Distinguish Flying Cross, for his service in Vietnam.
Jim was Exalted Ruler at the Farmington Elks Lodge from 1996 to 1997. He received All-State Inter Guard in 1994.
Jim is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna; daughter, Storme Smith; step-son, Dax Lujan and wife Katie; grandson, Riker Lujan; and sisters, Shirley Martin and Bonnie Cummins. He has numerous nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers.
Jim had become an animal activist and supported Doberman rescue groups as well as other animal rescue groups. It had been his plan to make part of his place in Odessa, Texas, a refuge for horses.
Jim was a generous, family-loving and patriotic man. One of his favorite things to do was take his family to the PBR finals in Las Vegas, Nev., every October.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Farmington Elks Lodge, No. 1747, 801 Municipal Drive.

Donna, may you find peace in knowing that Jim is in a far better place. I'm sure he's still making people laugh and helping stray animals. Stay strong and let your 26 years of wonderful memories help you through these difficult days.

Donna, I am so sorry for your loss, as well as the rest of the family. It is so hard for those of us left behind and we grieve, but I believe Jim is now in a better place and no longer fighting and suffering. I know God will take him and keep him safe.

Donna, you are in my prayers. God, in His infinite wisdom, has chosen to take Jim "home" to be with Him.....he is now whole again, smiling and waiting for the day you will see him again! Jim is not with you physically, but his spirit and the memories you have are God's way of comforting you as only He can. Trust and lean on Him and He will direct your path in all ways.
