Michael Wayne "Mikel J" Duggins

1949 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Michael Wayne "Mikel J" Duggins Obituary
Michael Wayne Duggins "Mickel J", 64, of Farmington, went home to his heavenly Father on Saturday, May 3, 2014. He was born June 30, 1949, in Wolf Lake, Ind., to Earl Wayne Duggins and Dorothy Mae Pierce.
Michael Wayne Duggins was known to many as Mickel J, as his best friend RG would always call him. Mickel spent his childhood years in Illinois and California before moving to Aztec in 1963. He graduated as a proud "68er" from Aztec High School in 1968. The same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Ann Chesnut.
Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard on Nov. 19, 1968. Upon his return from Fort Ord, Calif., Michael and Phyllis welcomed their first of three children, Dana "Bana," in 1969.
Michael worked as a mechanic for the El Paso Natural Gas Company for 20 years. Following his employment for the El Paso Natural Gas Company, Michael was the proud owner of Mike's Pickup and Auto Repair for 10 years.
Whenever he was not working, Michael's passion was to be behind the wheel of a race car, spending more than 20 years racing, sponsoring and mentoring other drivers. Many in the race world always knew Michael as having the loudest and neatest race cars, something he took great pride in. His smooth style of racing and his gift for throttle control was one of many ways Michael was recognized on the track. The one thing Michael taught many future champions is that the fastest way around the track was not to touch anyone!
Michael's most recent years were spent watching his grandkids compete in sports, camping, fishing and spending time in his beloved mountains in Silverton, Colo. The most recent memory of Michael was that of him taking care of his best friend and beautiful wife Phyllis.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Earl Wayne Duggins, and sister, Dixie Lee Harmon. He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 44 years, Phyllis Ann Chesnut Duggins; his three loving children, Dana Michelle Duggins (Jesus Mendoza) of Farmington, Mikel J. Duggins of Farmington and Jason Mitchell Duggins of Farmington; daughter in Christ, Millie Raymond of Farmington; sister, Sharon Duggins of Farmington; brother, Dennis Duggins (Mary) of Bernalillo; seven grandchildren, Alex Wayne Haley, Champ Mendoza, Tristan Duggins "Trissie Missie," Taylr Sandoval "Doonan," Kyler Duggins "Bing," Maci Carter and Trevor Duggins "Bang;" one great-grandchild, Jaxson Wayne Haley "Jax" and one on the way, Vallen J. Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews; and his longtime best friend, Ronald Earl Goshhorn "RG."
The family would like to express their appreciation to the San Juan Regional EMS Team and the San Juan County Sheriff's Department.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday May 13, at the home of Ron and Sharon Goshorn, 913 N. Jefferson Ave. in Farmington. Join the family in the celebration of Michael's life. Feel free to dress casual and bring your stories. Michael's care is entrusted to Alternative Choice, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, 505-325-9611.
