Robert Ray Chandler

1928 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Robert Chandler was born in Jennings, Kan., on March 21, 1928, to Archie
Edgar and Alfrieda Louise (Celik) Chandler. He graduated from high school
in Oberlin, Kan. He married the love of his life, Melva Jean Duckworth, on Feb. 16, 1947.
Together, they raised four children. Robert worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as
a safety inspector, a job which brought him to New Mexico to help oversee the construction of the NAPI project. He worked on the project from its inception through overseeing the miles of tunnel and irrigation system that stretched from the Navajo Dam into the Navajo Nation. Robert retired from the Bureau in the late 1970s and began working for Ashgrove Cement Company part-time until it closed its Farmington branch. Robert loved the times he had with his family, and he always made time for family activities. He also was an avid record collector, enjoyed going to yard sales, gardening and watching the wildlife that frequented his home. As a lifelong learner, Robert often took classes through San Juan College, where he earned an AA degree, as well as pursuing other interests, such as conversational Spanish, photography and horticulture. He enjoyed making new friends and most recently attending the Aztec Senior Center, playing dominos and participating in other social events there.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Melva Jean Chandler; parents, Archie Chandler and Alfrieda Webber (Celik); brother, Harwood Chandler; grandparents, John (Marie) Celik; and granddaughter Sara Jean Stevenson.
He is survived by his children, Collin (Chelo) Chandler, Gary (Connie) Chandler, Cathy (Tod) Stevenson, Patricia Carpenter and Chris Carpenter; grandchildren, Laurie Howell, Robbie Carpenter, Lisa Carpenter and Will Smith; great-grandchildren, Destiny Smith, Madison Smith, Hunter Smith, Blair Smith, Gabby Howell, Alexis Ontiveros and Kayla Ontiveros.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. today, May 8, in Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main St. in Farmington.
A reception will follow the service at Robert Chandler's home in Flora Vista.
Pallbearers are Gary Chandler, Collin Chandler, Tod Stevenson, Chris Carpenter, David
Howell and Ed Schmidt.
Memorial donations may be made to the Aztec Senior Center.
