Evelyn Rae (Benge) Reid, 93, of Farmington, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. She was born on Sept. 12, 1920, in Plaska, (Hall County) Texas, to Johnnie Newton Benge Bentley and H.S. Benge, and V.W. Bentley (stepfather). Evelyn grew up in West Texas, graduating from high school in Wheeler County, Texas. In 1942, she graduated college from North Texas University in Denton, Texas. She moved to Farmington to teach school in September of 1942. Evelyn taught high school, junior high and grades four through six for 32 years. Most of her teaching career was spent at McKinley Elementary. She loved her students and would always remember them by name. She was married to Arthur "Art" R. Reid on May 11, 1946, in Farmington at the First Baptist Church by Ron Pryor. Art and Evelyn loved to travel and retired to Forest Lakes in 1980. In 1992, Evelyn moved back to Farmington. She enjoyed being with family, playing bridge, working crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy and wheel of fortune. She loved Sunday school and church services for many years at the First Baptist Church. Evelyn became another mother to Scott (grandson) as she promised her only son who died in 1993. We love you and miss you, Gram.
Evelyn is survived by her grandson, Scott Reid; daughter-in-law, Carol Keppler of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Judy (Deeh) Thomas and family of Longview, Texas; nieces, Marsha Merrit of Clovis, and Glenda Duncan and family of Austin, Texas; special niece, Jan Goss (Bruce) and family; sister-in-laws, Rita Jameson (Pat) and their families; and a number of nieces, nephews and close cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; son, J. Michael Reid, in 1993; and close cousin, Lucille Foster.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home in Farmington.
Funeral services for Evelyn will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, at First Baptist Church, 511 N. Arrington St., in Farmington.
Interment will follow in the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield, Colo.
